CEDAR PARK, TEXAS – (October 28, 2011) - Cedar Park Regional Medical Center (CPRMC) has advanced their da Vinci robotic system to the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System, utilizing Skills Simulator technology. CPRMC is the first and only hospital in the Austin area to offer this technology.
In addition to the numerous technological advantages of the new Si platform, the Skills Simulator technology is a virtual-reality training simulator which provides surgeons with exercises designed to improve their proficiency with the da Vinci system. Carl Bischoff, M.D., Chief of the Robotics Program at CPRMC, and a fellowship trained urologist, emphasizes the importance of this technology in training surgeons who have not had formal robotic training experience as part of their surgical training during residency.
"We are proud to offer the newest generation of robotic surgery technology to the Austin area” said Tim Adams, CPRMC CEO. “We expect this advanced technology will enhance both physician and patients’ experiences with robotic surgery and serve as the platform for further growth of our robotics program, which we have had in place for over two years.” The hospital currently performs a wide variety of robotic procedures in urology, gynecology, bariatric, and general surgery.
During robotic surgery, the surgeon is seated at a console a few feet away from the patient and has a 360 degree, 3-D image of the surgical site while operating in real-time. The use of electromechanically-enhanced instruments, through tiny incisions, allows for greater dexterity in navigating complex anatomical structures. Patients undergoing this type of minimally invasive surgery may experience less pain, less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery and equivalent clinical outcomes
The da Vinci Si System introduces several new features designed to provide additional clinical benefits and operational efficiencies:
- Enhanced 3D HD resolution offers superior visual clarity of target tissue and anatomy (potentially allowing for greater surgical precision)
- An updated and simplified user interface enhances operating room efficiency
- New ergonomic settings to the console allows greater surgeon comfort and control
According to Dr. Bischoff the new features of the da Vinci Si System will further streamline surgical procedures and improve efficiencies. “This new system is further proof of our commitment to provide patients with surgical solutions that often times are less invasive, more precise and enable faster recovery for our patients.”
