Cedar Park Surgeon First in Central Texas to Remove Kidney with Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS™) Procedure
CEDAR PARK, TX (April 21, 2010)— Cedar Park Regional Medical Center (CPRMC) today announced that Carl Bischoff, MD has performed the first Radical Nephrectomy (removal of the entire kidney and adrenal gland) for kidney cancer using Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) in Central Texas. Dr. Bischoff is a member of Urology Austin and a member of the medical staff at Cedar Park Regional Medical Center.
One of the advantages of the SILS™ procedure is that it utilizes only one access point through the patient’s umbilicus or belly button, ultimately resulting in the potential for no visible scar, and possibly less pain. By comparison, traditional laparoscopic nephrectomies involve multiple incisions, and are commonly performed to remove cancerous kidneys. With the successful completion of this procedure Cedar Park Regional can now offer patients an advanced form of laparoscopic removal of the kidney for renal disease. Using the next generation SILS™ procedure surgeons can make a single 20mm incision through the belly button minimizing the pain that may be associated with the additional sites of entry.
“This procedure is not for every patient, however when used appropriately, it offers an additional treatment option for select patients,” said Dr. Carl Bischoff. “Procedures including the SILS™ technique are instrumental in helping us fulfill our goal of offering patients the latest advancements in medicine. Offering technologies at the forefront of minimally invasive surgery results in a better overall experience for our patients.”
Tim Adams, CEO at Cedar Park Regional Medical Center said, “We are committed to providing the very best medical care by bringing new services to the area. We are also fortunate to be using the SILS procedure to perform other types of surgeries including those related to urologic, gynecologic, and bariatric conditions.”
