Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight loss procedure where up to 80 percent of a patient’s stomach is removed, leaving in a thin, vertical “sleeve-like” structure. This procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach, limiting the amount of food a patient is able to eat and helping them to feel fuller sooner. There is no rerouting of the small bowel in this procedure, so any food consumed passes through the digestive tract in the usual order, allowing it to be fully absorbed in the body.
At Cedar Park Regional Medical Center, this procedure is performed laparoscopically, which means that it is minimally invasive, using several small incisions rather than one large one. Patient benefits include a shorter hospital stay, less pain and a quicker recovery.
