Angioplasty
At Cedar Park Regional Medical Center, heart care specialists focus on the rapid identification and diagnosis of heart attacks. From the moment a patient experiences the first symptom of a heart attack, the race against time begins. Because every minute is vitally important, the heart care team monitors the door-to-balloon time for each patient. This is the time from the patient's arrival (door) until the start of treatment (balloon).
The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology have established guidelines that call for a door-to-balloon time of less than 90 minutes in hospitals that provide angioplasty.
Angioplasty is a procedure in which a small balloon is guided through a vessel and then inflated to open a blocked artery. This restores the blood flow to the heart and the lower the door-to-balloon time, the better the patient's outcomes.
