What causes non-healing wounds?
Chronic and non-healing wounds can result from a number of factors, including diabetes, poor circulation, trauma, vascular disease and immobility. Wounds can arise from a variety of medical conditions, and numerous factors can affect their healing. An estimated eight million Americans suffer from chronic wounds.
Will I have to change my primary care doctor or specialist?
No. In fact, the Wound Care Center prefers to work closely with your physician during your treatment, providing them frequent progress reports.
Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy safe?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a safe and evidence-based treatment proven to speed the healing process for certain types of wounds. In fact, many patients find it relaxing! The clear chambers are equipped with TVs, DVD players and comfortable bedding. The hyperbaric technician is at your side for the entire treatment. The most common experience you will have is during the beginning (pressurization phase) of the treatment, when pressure on the eardrum is experienced. This is exactly the feeling you would have when landing in an airplane or diving to the bottom of the pool. The staff will instruct you on the different methods to relieve this ear pressure. A typical course of treatment involves patients spending about 110 minutes a day in the chamber, five days a week over a four-to-six-week period.
Does insurance cover specialized wound care treatments?
Many insurance plans cover wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, but an individual's coverage depends on the specific plan. If your insurance does not cover your treatment, we will help you with financial arrangements.
What can I expect at the first appointment?
Your first appointment consists of an assessment by the skilled wound care team, a review of your medical history and recommendations for your treatment plan. Please be sure to bring your insurance information, a list of current medications and notation of any allergies to your first appointment. The initial appointment usually lasts from one and a half to two hours.
